Father’s Day History

The origins of Father's Day date back to the last century, when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by Mother's Day, came up with the desire for a special occasion to honor and appreciate fathers. Raised by her father, Sonora believed that all fathers should also be recognized and appreciated by all, so in 1910 she came up with the concept of Father's Day.

The first official Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. The day has gradually gained popularity. It was not until 1966, however, that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making Father's Day a permanent national holiday in the United States. Since then, Father's Day has been widely celebrated around the world, with each country adopting its own dates and traditions to honor fathers and father figures, emphasizing their important role in raising and shaping future generations.
